Kiper C. Nelson, M.D., joined Southern Eye Center after completing a residency in ophthalmology at the distinguished Wake Forest Eye Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He has completed an intensive clinical fellowship in cataract and lens implants with Dr. Lynn McMahan, focusing his surgical skills in this area of eye care. You can consider him a cataract "super specialist."

A native of Yazoo City, Mississippi, Dr. Nelson served as Chief Resident at the Wake Forest Eye Center, directing the residency program. He received his medical degree and completed an internship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, where he graduated Alpha Omega Alpha, the most distinguished medical honorary in the country. Dr. Nelson finished in the top 5% of his medical school class. Prior to medical school, Dr. Nelson received his bachelor degree in Engineering at the University of Mississippi, earning membership in Tau Beta Pi, a prestigious national engineering honor society. Dr. Nelson's background in engineering and medicine allow him a unique understanding of the workings of the eye and the high technology used in modern eye surgery.

Dr. Nelson is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology. He is actively involved in research in his specialty, and has lectured ophthalmolgists at the ASCRS and ARVO national meetings in San Diego and Fort Lauderdale.

In the community, Dr. Nelson is involved with the Hattiesburg Kiwanis Club. He was recently named Top 40 Under 40 by The Mississippi Business Journal in 2002. This is an award given to recognize outstanding achievement among young businessmen and professionals in the state of Mississippi.

For donating his time and skills to perform free eye surgery for needy patients her in Mississippi, Dr. Nelson was awarded one of 10 national Make a Difference Day awards from USA Today, the largest syndicated newspaper in the United States.

Dr. Nelson is married to the former Laura Lee Peaster. They have three children, Win, Thomas, and Ella. He enjoys outdoor activities, including golf, hunting, fishing, and college football.
