RE: December 14, 2009 Service Outage
Megagate Broadband experienced a service outage affecting part of our network from approximately 1:05 PM until 6:13 PM, December 14, 2009. A lighting strike near one of the Megagate Points of Presence (POP) in Hattiesburg affected equipment in that location. AT&T and Verizon also had equipment affected by the lightning strike. Verizon had over 50 cell sites out of service, and AT&T suffered an outage affecting an OC-192 circuit (equivalent to 10 Gigabits). All three companies worked together to resolve the outage as quickly as possible.
Telephone and Internet carrier core networks are engineered with huge amounts of redundancy and protection. Such engineering does not prevent outages from happening. These redundancies do, however, provide protection paths so that usually an outage in a core network does not affect customers. Unfortunately, on rare occasions (typically due to violent acts of nature or catastrophic events) a core network outage will affect both the primary and protect paths in a network and cause customer networks to be out of service. Since service providers often work together in the same core facilities, an outage like this will usually be widespread and affect multiple companies. To minimize downtime during such events, inventories of spare parts are kept readily accessible.
We greatly regret the inconvenience caused to you and your company by the network outage. The outage has now been resolved. If you are experiencing any other trouble with your service, please contact us immediately at 601.450.5000 or 1-86-MEGAGATE (1.866.342.4283).
Thank you for choosing Megagate Broadband as your telecommunications provider.
